Program/Service Notes:
Facility advocates: conduct abuse and neglect investigations and monitor seclusion, restraints, accidents and injuries occurring to patients in state-operated behavioral health facilities. Advocates also educate facility staff about patients rights and help patients know their own rights and the process available to them to make sure those rights are not violated. Community advocates: work with people outside the state facilities who have severe emotional disturbances, severe mental illness, substance addiction and co-existing conditions who are not eligible for other advocacy services. They emphasize problem prevention through education, working with groups, monitoring self-help programs and advocacy to make systems function better.
