Learn and Play Center

The Learn and Play Center is a comprehensive, early childhood program that nurtures the social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development of your child. The Center is based on the philosophy that “all children are born to learn and learning begins at birth”.

The Center provides opportunities for a variety of age-appropriate developmental activities through the Creative Curriculum©. This unique program fosters creativity in both children and teachers. Being creative means thinking of new ideas, obtaining information by asking questions, learning though trial and error, and benefiting from mistakes. Your child's creativity is therefore supported through a play environment that encourages them to try out ideas and risk making mistakes. Our teacher’s creativity is supported through a framework that encourages them to be innovative and responsive to your child. By focusing on both the teacher and the child, the Creative Curriculum provides a blueprint for developing an educational setting in which your child can thrive!

The Center provides:
  • nutritious meals and snacks served family style
  • a safe, secure state-of-the-art facility
  • a large outdoor playground
  • a convenient location
  • CPR- and first aid-certified educators
The Learn and Play Center is located in the Schoenbaum Family Enrichment Center (SFEC) on Charleston’s west side. Families enrolled in the Learn and Play Center have access to all the services in the SFEC. These include medical and dental care on a sliding fee scale through Family Care, housing assistance through Charleston Housing, and employment opportunities through the HOPE Workforce Development Center. In addition, United Way of Central West Virginia's Information and Referral and Volunteer Resource Center, also located in the SFEC, can help individuals and families find the services they need. The staff maintains a database of more than 800 health and human services programs for Boone, Clay, Kanawha, and Putnam counties.

The Learn and Play Center is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tours of our facility are welcome and parent participation is encouraged. The Center is fully licensed through the Department of Health and Human Resources and employs an experienced and qualified staff who are trained in early childhood development.
